Sexting: Cincy teens ahead on this trend

Of all the things for Cincinnati to be first to jump on, who would have thought it would be "sexting"? That is, sending naked pictures. Full body, just body parts, porn shots, send on a cell phone.

Are these kids brain dead? How can they be so tech savvy and so tech stupid at the same time? The second it hits someone's camera, it can be posted on the Web for anyone to see. Girls send pictures to their boyfriends, not realizing the guy now has a new way to brag about his sexual conquests. He shows the picture to his buds, sends it on to his best friend, who adds it to his Facebook page, etc.

This drives me crazy. It seems like kids have no boundaries anymore. Too many adults and too many media venues tell these kids that sex is like Playdough—fun while it lasts, nothing permanent about it. No one is telling them that some choices are just stupid.

But while they are tech savy, they are emotionally immature and don't yet have the ability to fully internalize the ramifications of their actions....

It's funny you brought this up. I was on You-Tube last night and found a clip of my ex being interviewed while intoxicated 20 years ago. It was under a local band. My daughter was in the room and couldn't believe it was her Dad my son got a kick out of him flubbing words with a S***-eating grin on his face.

I reminded them that everything you put on camera can haunt you for the rest of your lives.

The story said some kids are just sending pictures of bodies, no heads, to try to avoid that. Which begs the question: If you know the picture could show up on the Internet (so you don't include your face), why....?

I get that most teens have the long-range vision of a mosquito. But when did society decide to  write them off as no different than animals, unable to control their biological urges? Aren't we supposed to be showing them that there is something more noble in life?

I saw a thing on Oprah once about this boy who was selling himself over the internet with his webcam. Many experts from the show said that teens know the only reason to have a webcam is for nudity/porn via the internet. Maybe the same is true for camera phones. Maybe teens just should not have them period. I don't have a teen so I don't know if that's the answer.

even my 16 year old - who can not be the brightest crayon in the box at times - was amazed at the stupidity of the cheerleaders in the one news story. and i am constantly reminding her - when you go to a concert - don't lift up your shirt or do anything you don't want the world to see cause it WILL be on youtube.

her response - "how stupid do you think i am?"

I don't have a camera phone. I went out of my way to find the one Motorola that doesn't have one. AT&T doesn't sell it anymore and it's getting worn out, so I'm going to check out eBay for a replacement. But, that doesn't stop them from using regular digital cameras. All you can do is talk, talk, talk to your kids and hope they listen. But then, all those trashy "reality" shows don't help.
