Tylenol or no?

At what point do you give your child Tylenol/Motrin for a fever?  DH and I were "discussing" this today and my take is that a fever is not a bad thing - it means your body is doing it's job at fighting off whatever is wrong.  Assuming our son is not uncomfortable, then I think it's best to hold off on Tylenol until his temperature is close to 102.  He thinks any fever warrents medicine, say as soon as it hits 100.

Opnions?

I'm with you-  I usually give it if they feel sick/achy or if the fever is high.  If it's a low grade fever and they're playing fine then no need for meds.

I generally only give it when the fever is over 101.  However, I will sometimes give it before bed if the fever is around 100 (if she appears uncomfortable), b/c I feel that it is important for her to be able to sleep in order to heal.

If it is over 101 and they are miserable with it then I give meds. If they are not really miserable then I will wait and see, if it gets to 102 I automatically give meds.

CM - anything over 100.4 is considered a fever.

Uh oh, sounds like I better wake my daughter.  She's at 103 and really resistant to taking medicine.  Since she wasn't in any pain, just hot and tired, I let her go without.  Just a cool bath, some liquids, and off to bed for some rest.  I told her if it went any higher, she had to take some.  But maybe I better wake her and get some in her if everyone automatically gives it at 102.

For me if its over I hold off on meds until a fever meds until its 100  or more but its usually 101 or more at that point and we begin the regiment of motrin/ibuprofen that lasts for DS like clock work 6 hours.  However after about 3 days of this  fever game of it  going away and coming back I will begin the ibuprofen and tylenol  flip flop and  honestly almost every time it has broken the fever. Could be the fever has run its course by that time or that combo has worked either way I hold out until I must on that combo.     I generally don't wake them to take the meds but I am very close at hand watching their every move and probably even sleeping with them to check for changes and keeping a cool cloth on their heads. Yeah so what even at 11. So what! Flame away!

2LB, I would skip a cool bath next time. My daughter hasn't had a high fever before but I brought it up at an appointment and her doc said a cool bath does the exact opposite. Their bodies will then work harder to maintain their temperature which then lowers their ability to fight off any infection/fever they had.

I usually don't give meds until the child is really miserable, which isn't often.  I think my kids are going to grow up and work with infectious diseases b/c they never get sick, even in school or daycare.  The bring everything home to me, but they never seem to get sick.  I am thankful for them not getting sick, but I could skip catching it all from them.   LOL
