I've been wanting to start this discussion for a while and I hope it gets a lot of replies.

List whatever has helped you, or whatever you can think of that would help people save money.  If you can't think of anything unique you can add a more obvious way if it hasn't been posted.

Here's mine:

Declutter your house- I know when I do this I often find things that were hiding in drawers or something that my kids lost and then I'm able to not buy those things!  We've lost so many scotch tape and packing tape rolls its insane, and we always seem to be buying more.  If I keep my house well organized I can keep from losing those things and having to buy more!

In the summer time we take coolers filled with ice most places we go.  When the ice melts I use the water to water my plants.

We never buy ice either - we stock up from the freezer ice maker and always have a few bags of ice in the deep freeze.

When I clean my fish take I dump all the old water in my flower beds, they seem to like it.

I keep a change jar next to the washer.  My dh always leaves change in his pockets.  I usually have around $100 in change every year that I put in one of those change machines and get a gift card to toys r us to use for Christmas gifts.

You can cut your dryer sheets in half and they still do the same job.

Use powder instead of liquid laundry soap, that was a tip from a p&g employee.  He said people use much more liquid then powder so they have to buy twice as much.

You can also cut your dish washer tabs in half, although it is difficult to do, it still gets your dishes clean.

I like to fill my cooking pots with hot water vs. waiting longer for the water to boil on the stove.  I put the cold water that comes out of the faucet in a pitcher and put it in the dogs bowl and water plants with it.

I also make sure to run hot water in the faucet before starting my dishwasher so the dishwasher doesn't have to heat the water before beginning the wash cycle.

If I boil eggs I reuse the water for pasta or to boil potatoes.

Since I had 2 girls I passed down clothing.

I hit up yard sales in the summer for clothes for the kids....I can never find clothes unless it's maternity wear.

We're waiting to buy a new car (even though we really need one) until old Rusty can't be driven anymore. We also only have one car, saves us on another car payment and insurance.

Simple... but stopped buying bottled water, drink it from the tap.... crazy how much that saves.

For me, I took this old saying to heart... "The heart desires what the eye sees."

So I never look through catalogs. I don't get fashion magazines.  I don't window-shop.  When I go shopping, even to the grocery store, I take a list and shop from that.

(btw, boysaremessy - the decluttering thing is SO true)

I only run full loads of laundry and full loads of dishes. I also keep my freezer full.  I was told by an appliance repairman that it is much easier on the refrigerator if it is kept full.  I make sure that anything that I am not using such as cell phone chargers is not plugged in.  These use electricity too.  I make sure that lights are always turned off when I'm not in a room.  Oh, and I don't always wash my work clothes every time after I wear them. I work in an office and they really don't get smelly or dirty by sitting at my desk. Usually a little Febreze and they are good enough to wear again a couple more times. Plus the clothes last longer.

If it's just us at home, no visitors... we follow the golden rule:

"If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down".

Saves water...

The boys and I just finished making homemade laundry detergent for the first time - less than $6 for product and it made 6 gallons. We have to let it sit overnight, though. Hope it works well!

How we save money, use our coupons , only buy things on sale, or clearance.

Stock up when there is an awesome sale.

I rarely keep a tv on during the day. While everyone is @ work and School all lights are off in the house, and no tv's on. That seems to save alot.

I walk my children to school every morning and we walk home in the afternoon. This has saved on gas, and been great exercise for us all.  I combined all trips when going out.

I keep the thermostat on 77 in the summer and @ 69-70 in the winter.

I thnk I could go on and on, but I am all about saving every dime cause we dont have that many dimes and boy do they add up.

I quit smoking on April 1, 2009.
